Lewis Park

Lewis Park is the title usually given to the entire lawn area encircling The Meeting House and the 1810 House. This lawn area bound by Church Street, Main Street & High Street is actually two areas formed from several small properties.

The Lewis family started purchasing the grounds piece by piece in the 1960s and generously donated the finished product to the Historical Society in 1976.

In 1984 Lewis park was designated the Warwick Village Historic District.

The large lawn area is officially named “Lewis Green” and was created by Elizabeth Sanford Lewis and her daughters in memory of her husband Madison Horton Lewis in 1970.

The original Lewis Park is the smaller section of the park at the intersection of Main and High Streets. It was created in 1956 by Hope Horton Lewis in memory of her husband, Edward Lewis.

Today, Lewis Park is the location of many community events including summer programs for children, historical reenactments, holiday markets and The Historical Society’s annual “Party in the Park”.

In the 1950s, the rest of the land around The Meeting House was going to be cleared to make room for an even larger dealership. The Lewis family knew it would be a terrible loss of Warwick’s historic center, so they bought the land piece by piece beginning in 1955. They preserved the church grounds and tore down a row of small, run-down houses that were located along the picket fence area.
